Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) have requested the resigning eight members to retain their government positions.

A total of seven members from MRM who held government posts, and one member without any government position had sent a joint letter to the party formally tendering their resignation. The members cited that the party’s spirit is at odds with the government.

In the letter, the members stated that MRM was founded under the guidance of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, but that his principles and philosophies have faded and the party has now become a tool to accomplish certain objectives.

The letter also stated that while MRM played a significant role in the government, some of its members have recently been working against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.

In response to this, MRM in a statement said that the names it nominated for government positions were capable and professional individuals, and requested from the members to remain in their positions. The party also thanked the resigning members for their services.

MRM had not responded to any of the grievances voiced by the members in their letter, while it reaffirmed commitment towards working for the betterment and welfare of the people.

"...MRM began with the aim of upholding the interests of the nation and will continue to work for the welfare of the people," the statement said.
