Mohamed Mazin won the gold medal at the 5th Indian Open Para Athletics Championships being held in Bangalore from May 5 to 7.
This is the firdt gold medal for the Maldives in para athletics. Mohamed Mazin, guided by Hussain Shifaz, won the gold medal in the 100 meter T11 category on Sunday, finishing the race in 16.39 seconds.
Mazin is currently the most successful para athlete in the Maldives. He previously won a bronze medal at the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).
Mazin is determined to continue training hard to bring home more medals for Maldives in the international arena. He hopes to win a medal at this year's Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) as well.
The tournament in India serves as a points qualifier for the World Para-Athletics Championships in Paris, France, which is scheduled for July of this year, as well as the 6th Asian Para-Games in Hangzhou, China, scheduled to take place in October. In addition to Maldives, athletes from Greece, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia are also competing in the tournament.
The tournament which comes with regional sports training has trained a para-athletics player, a para-athletics coach, a para-athletics technical official, and a para-badminton classifier from Maldives.
