Law programs are one of the most popular higher education fields for students with its demand continuously increasing each year.

Each year, Villa College receives numerous applications of students wishing to pursue their education in law while several of these students are residing outside of the Greater Malé area. To enhance participation of students from all over the Maldives, Villa College has now facilitated online law courses.

Villa College offers diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, and Masters Degree in LLB and Shariah Law, under the college’s Faculty of Shariah and Law. Among the law courses offered, Masters in Shariah and Law allows students to specialize in criminal law.

Speaking about the courses, the Dean of Faculty of Shariah and Law Asna Ahmed said that the college’s law courses are taught by academic and experienced professionals.

She said that with the rising popularity of the courses among students, the college continuously puts efforts to enhance the learning experience and that the courses were designed with industry opinion and after identifying ways to enhance students professional experience after their studies.

"We always prioritize improving the learning experience through insight provided by legal experts and student feedback," Asna said.

A significant number of the students who apply for the courses hold senior positions in various public and private sector offices. Asna noted that many of the professionals serving in the Maldives judiciary and high-profile private or public organizations are graduates of Villa College.

The college offers experiential learning opportunities to students, such as moot camps, participation in international competitions, legal drafting workshops. Villa College collaborates with the Maldives Police Service to provide evidence gathering or forensic workshops for law students.

Villa College has also collaborated with the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) to raise awareness about the importance of pro bono legal work and allow students to participate in pro bono cases.

In addition to this, the college allows students to submit academic articles at various local or international conferences, encouraging them to conduct academic research.

The college recently introduced a “Law Society” specifically for law students which conducts various activities to enhance student inclusivity in legal matters. The society is managed under the college’s Faculty of Shariah and Law

Villa College has also begun offering America’s "Street Law" academic program, which is offered at several international universities. This is the first time such a program has been offered in the Maldives. The program aims to raise awareness of the legal sector among students and provide them with practical knowledge.

While Villa College offers its own law courses, it has also affiliated with United Kingdom’s University of the West of England (UWE) to provide their LLB (Honors) and LLM (Commercial Law) programs. The law courses offered by the college are approved by the Maldives Bar Council.

Applications for the programs are open until the end of April, 2023.

Villa College also offers its students the convenience of paying their course fees in monthly installments.
