Local aviation giant Mega Maldives Airlines has decided to halt its operations to Indian capital New Delhi.

According to an official of the Maldives’ only international carrier, Mega will stop New Delhi flights from Sunday onwards, stating that the company has to return the aircraft it brought in for the operations in addition to lacking enough passengers.

“We wanted to conduct the flights during the high season. The aircraft we brought in for these flights has to be returned by the end of March. On top of that, we didn’t get as many passengers as we’d hoped for, so we decided to stop the flights.”

The official proclaimed that the airline received a lot of positive feedback from the passengers of the New Delhi flights as there are currently no direct flights between the Maldives and north India. Mega said that, thus, they are looking to resume operations to the Indian capital towards the end of this year.

Mega Maldives had conducted three weekly flights to New Delhi which commenced last November. The company assured refunds to passengers that have purchased tickets for future flights.

The airline currently operates international flights to Beijing and Shanghai of China and Hong Kong.
