Tourist influx to Maldives amid peak season in 2022 has been comparatively lower than the same period last year, says Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Managing Director Thoyyib Mohamed.

While speaking at the welcoming event for the 1.6 millionth tourist to Maldives, Thoyyib said travelers had a wider range of destination options as global aviation picked up momentum, unlike last year. Thoyyib also noted the FIFA World Cup had slowed down travel to Maldives.

He also highlighted global challenges in 2022 which acted against aviation and traveler numbers.

Despite the notable slowdown, Thoyyib said there was no room for concern, and thanked tourism industry contributors for ensuring the state’s tourist arrival aspiration for the year was achieved.

Maldives achieved its state-declared 1.6 million travel target on December 20. India’s Tejas Sanjay Kothari, who flew for his honeymoon, became the 1.6 millionth traveler.

With noticeable economic recovery at a global scale, and continued momentum in global aviation, the state has set a target of 1.8 million tourists for 2023.

“We will begin our work with renewed efforts and proper planning. Hopefully we will achieve this target,” Thoyyib said.

MMPRC is the country’s premier tourism and destination promoting board, actively participating in multiple global travel trade fairs, campaigns, roadshows among other travel-centric events to promote Maldives as a top holiday destination.

So far in 2022, MMPRC has promoted Maldives in 88 such global events, boosting travel interest to Maldives.
