Maldives unveiled new currency notes on Monday with the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol for the first time.

The symbol was used in the MVR 50 note. According to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the symbol will be seen alongside the numerical value on the left upper corner on the side of the note and on the lower right corner of the other side.

However, MMA did not say when the notes will be released into circulation.

The symbol for Maldivian Rufiyaa, a line across the Thaana letter Raa was introduced in July of this year.

Last year, when MMA opened up for design applications for the Rufiyaa symbol, they received 70 proposals. The best design was selected by a panel of technical judges.
