Every year, Maldivian tourism promoters, industry affiliates, and other key stakeholders host and execute several tourism industry-related activities that are aimed to boost the popularity of the Maldives tourism brand image, creating stronger buzz across international news platforms, and maintaining destination momentum.

Every year, the Maldivian tourism industry is bustling with several such activities that either boost or expand the economic sector individually or holistically. Similar activities were carried out during this year as well.

Welcoming of the First Tourist of 2022

The island nation might be among the very few tourism-heavy destinations that in fact, celebrate the arrival of the first tourist of each year. As such, Maldives welcomed the first visitor for the year 2022 with a special celebration at the island nation’s main airport; Velana International Airport (VIA).

The year’s first tourist arrival was a UK national, Ms. Georgina Canning who along with her partner were greeted at VIA by Ministry of Tourism officials and higher-ups of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) along with senior members of Maldives Immigration and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Ms. Canning had received a 5-night holiday with full-board meal plan for two persons at Adaaran Prestige Vadoo.

Tourism affiliated associations meet Minister of Tourism

It was reported that on January 3 2022, members of the National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) along with their newly elected president Mr. Ismail Hameed, met with Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom for discussions.

Discussions were mainly focused on opportunities in the tourism industry as well as the challenges faced by the liveaboards and safari vessels sector.

On January 4 2022, members of Gaaf Alif atoll Vilingili Council and the constituency’s parliamentarian Mr. Saud Hussain met with Dr. Mausoom to discuss tourism development-related opportunities for the island.

Up-skilling Courses in Laamu Atoll

Ministry of Tourism and UNDP partnered with Maldives Polytechnic under the Reimagining Tourism Project to announce two, Level-3 certificate courses in Laamu Atoll. The courses include CIII in Guesthouse Management and CIII in Small Business Management.

The courses were aimed at encouraging the development of the local tourism businesses at an individual and holistic capacity; primarily for homestays, guesthouses, and other tourism affiliated businesses in a move to increase tourism benefits to communities and stimulate the local economy.

Covid-19 Vaccine Booster Doses for Tourism Sector Employees

The Ministry of Tourism initiated the Covid-19 booster dose vaccination program for the tourism sector frontline workers in January in association with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) of the Maldives.

By late January, it was attested that a total of 3,026 tourism frontline employees have been administered with the booster shot. Meanwhile, under the “I’m Vaccinated” campaign launched back in 2021, 98 percent of the tourism frontline workers had gotten two of the initial doses of the vaccine by the third week of January this year.
