Sri Lankan Airlines, on Thursday, have begun direct flights between Maldives and Japan.

A total of four weekly flights will be scheduled between Velana International Airport (VIA) and Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan.

The service marks the first time an airline operated direct flights linking the two countries.

Japan ranks as the ninth country from which Maldives attracted the greatest number of tourists. In 2018, a total of 42,304 Japanese holidaymakers visited the country.

The airline manages daily flights to Sri Lanka from VIA. Six weekly flights to Lanka are also operated from Gan International Airport.
