Over 842,000 SIM cards used in Maldives

Communications Authority of Maldives revealed that over 842,000 SIM cards were in use in the Maldives by the end of February 2019.

According to statistics publicised by the authority, 690,000 of the total were prepaid SIMs, while postpaid numbers were at 150,000.

Moreover, fixed broadband internet connection users number at 48,000 while mobile broadband connects are at 280,000.

These statistics indicate that the number of mobile phones used in the country are double the current Maldivian population of over 450,000.

Maldives currently boasts the highest ratio of internet users in terms of population size, in the South Asian region. According to Internet World Stats, there were 340,000 Internet users in Maldives by the end of December 2018, accounting for 75.3 percent penetration.

Communications Authority's statistics further revealed that there were 18,000 active telephone lines in Maldives by February 2019, out of which 13,500 lines were in capital Male' City.
