Winning 33 seats in by-elections a major achievement: President

According to the provisional results from the Elections Commission, PNC secured nine out of 12 contested seats, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won two seats, and two independent candidates had also secured seats.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that ruling People's National Congress (PNC)'s success in the local council and women's development committee by-elections is a significant achievement.

According to the provisional results from the Elections Commission, PNC secured nine out of 12 contested seats, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won two seats, and two independent candidates had also secured seats.

In a post on X last night, President Muizzu, who is also the President of PNC, highlighted that the party won 24 seats unopposed and secured nine out of 12 contested seats, bringing their total to 33 seats.

“PNC has secured one Atoll Council President seat, one Island Council President seat, two Island Council member seats, and 29 Women's Development Committee seats,” he said.

President Muizzu extended congratulations to the winning candidates and expressed gratitude to those who worked for the victory and participated in the elections.

He said that PNC won 24 seats unopposed, as only one candidate contested in those constituencies.

PNC won seats in Noonu Atoll Landhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll Hirimaradhoo, Baa Atoll Goidhoo, Baa Atoll Fehendhoo, Raa Atoll Innamaadhoo (two seats), Laamu Atoll Gan, Gaafu Alifu Atoll Kanduhulhudhoo, and Thaa Atoll Buruni.

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won seats in Noonu Atoll Miladhoo and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hangnaameedhoo. Meanwhile, independent candidates secured Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo and Dhaalu Atoll Hulhudheli Women's Development Committee seats.

Elections Commission reported a voter turnout of 6,275 people, accounting for 55.41 percent of eligible voters as of 4:00 p.m. yesterday.
