Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said today that about 300 staff of the education sector have been penalized without sufficient evidence against them, including transferring principals to schools other than where they are assigned to.

The Minister made these comments while responding to a question posed by South Fuvahmulah MP Ibrahim Hussain. The MP's question was regarding concerns raised by parents of some principals discriminating amongst students.

He said that such complaints had been submitted to the ministry both in the previous administration and now, but no resolution is found.

Shafeeu responded that when he had been given the responsibility over the education sector, the first advice the President had offered to him was to act justly towards workers.

The Minister said that many employed in the sector had been done injustice to by the time this administration had come to office.

"When I took up this office, about 40 principals in Maldives had been banished to places other than where they were assigned to. Some employees had been done injustice against. About 300 staff have been penalized without just cause or sufficient evidence," he said.

The Minister said that in resolving issues, fairness must be the priority, and not sternness.

He asserted that no action will be taken against staff before a team from the Ministry visits the school where the issue is and properly looks into the matter.
