Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif has been suspended over corruption allegations.
Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif has been suspended Maldives Correctional Service yesterday.
According to Maldives Corrections, Asif's suspension took immediate effect yesterday. However, the agency refused to provide further information as the matter is still under investigation.
Local reports say that an internal notice to all employees of Maldives Corrections barred Asif from entering any of Maldives Correction's premises.
He is being accused of transferring over MVR 200,000 from the Prisons Club bank account to various other accounts. These allegations were levelled against him the employees of the agency.
The employees also submitted a petition against Asif, who is also the President of the Prisons Club, to the Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer. However delayed actions against Asif raised concerns amongst Maldives Corrections staff.
