All nations must collaborate to overcome climate change: Ghassan

Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon highlighted the importance of global cooperation in addressing the damage caused by climate change.

Speaking at the "Disaster Risk Reduction Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference" in Manila, Philippines, Ghassan said that small island nations like Maldives face significant risks due to climate change. He added that larger nations must collaborate with smaller countries to mitigate the damage caused by climate disasters.

Ghassan further noted that Maldives is already working with other countries to prevent such incidents and underscored the collective responsibility to support one another in the face of climate disasters.

The Minister also said that under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration, efforts to reduce climate risks for Maldives have been prioritized and added that the five-year national plan, the "National Disaster Reduction Strategy 2024-2030," will be launched next month.

Additionally, Ghassan highlighted the Maldives early participation in the United Nations "Early Warning for All Initiative," and said that the country was among the first to formulate a roadmap and begin its implementation.
