HDC is reviewing the winner of the monument design competition.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to review submissions for its monument design competition after allegations surfaced that the initial winners used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create their designs for monuments planned in Hulhumalé roundabouts aimed at easing traffic flow.
Submissions for the competition were opened in September, with the requirement of designing monuments for 17 areas. The theme of the competition was 'Dhivehinge Raajje [Maldivians' Maldives] and a cash prize of MVR 100,000 was offered for the best submission.
After the winner's design was announced yesterday, many took to social media to voice dissatisfaction, alleging it was AI-generated. Critics argued this was unfair to designers who had put in genuine effort.
In a statement issued tonight HDC said that a total of 7 parties submitted their designs for the competition and that a panel of professional staff judges selected the winners.
However, it further said that the company has received multiple complaints alleging that the winning designs were AI generated, which is why the company is re-evaluating its decision.
The competition was intended to showcase the creativity and ideas of Dhivehi artists, HDC said, emphasising its commitment to ensuring opportunities for local artists to participate in such initiatives. The corporation also reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and welcomed public feedback and consultation on such matters.
