The Special Needs Centre in Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo has a bedbug infestation, with videos circulating on social media showing bugs on beds and walls in a ward at the centre.
The video shows bugs running over the sheets and pillows even as a person lies on the bed. The video also shows bugs crawling on the walls.
The caption of the video claims that this is the current situation of an inhabited ward at the centre.
The centre was transferred under the care of the Ministry of Health in August. Prior to this, the Ministry of Social and Family Development oversaw its operations.
Mihaaru News reached out to the Health Ministry for comment over the past four days, with the only response being that they had 'nothing to say'.
The same issue of a bedbug infestation at the centre arose back in 2022 as well.
Last May, the Social and Family Development Ministry said that 221 persons were residing at the centre then. This includes 183 persons receiving treatment for mental illnesses, 32 senior citizens and 15 bedridden patients.
The Ministry said at the time that since last November, 15 people have been returned to the care of their families after treatment, and 24 others - 10 women and 14 men - are in the process of being reintegrated into society.
