Allocation of land plots under the government’s Binveriyaa housing scheme to individuals who did not apply, including the brother of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Fazul Rasheed, has been submitted to parliament for investigation.
Although the parliament is currently on recess, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), has raised the issue as an urgent matter.
In a letter to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP Mohamed alleged that HDC allocated land outside the scheme's regulations. The letter also noted that five months had passed since the issue came to the government’s attention, yet no action had been taken.
MP Mohamed called on the parliament to urgently investigate the matter and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The controversy escalated yesterday when a special police team entered HDC’s office at around 17:00 hrs. This followed the circulation of documents on social media suggesting land was allocated to individuals outside the scheme. The misallocation came to light when HDC sought the Housing Ministry’s permission to construct boundary walls on the plots.
Among those was Fazul Rasheed's brother, Fazeel Rasheed, who reportedly received land despite not being an applicant under the Binveriyaa scheme, according to a letter from the Housing Ministry.
