Lhaviyani Atoll Naifaru secured a 1-0 victory over Kaafu atoll Maafushi in their first match of the Gold Cup.
Despite Maafushi entering the tournament with top-division experience, Naifaru managed to take the win.
Both teams had opportunities to score, but the first half ended in a 0-0 draw. In the 58th minute Imran Mohamed scored the only goal of the match, assisted by Ibrahim Visham.
Naifaru maintained their lead throughout the second half, although Maafushi created several chances to equalize. In extra time, Maafushi came close twice, but their attempts went wide.
Maafushi squad features several players from The Grande Sports Club, who competed in the 2022 Dhivehi Premier League. Additionally, Uzbek defender Furkatjon Hasaboev and Hussain Faisal, both of whom played for Victory Sports Club in the second division last season, are part of the team. Faisal, a Naifaru resident plays as the team captain.
Naifaru and Maafushi are in Group D, along with Baa atoll Kendhoo and Raa atoll Alifushi. Kendhoo and Alifushi will face off on Monday at 21:00hrs.
