President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced last night that the ruling People's National Congress will reject the Media and Broadcasting Commission Bill, which grants control of media to the government, which was submitted by an independent Member of Parliament.
The President made these remarks while speaking at a ceremony held last night at the Social Centre to mark one year in office.
He said that the bill did not align with the policies he stands by. Stating that he has no interest in controlling media, the President said that he wishes to see media operating with even more freedom.
"We will not do that at all. Instead, we will work to empower media. For that reason, the proposed budget for next year has, for the first time, an allocation of funds that will be issued to media outlets. For the first time, just as I pledged," he said.
The President further said that office space will be provided to all media that work within regulations at the new STO Hotel that is being built.
