A tripartite agreement was signed on the allocation of this land today between HDC, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
In the ceremony held at the Environment Ministry, the agreement was signed by Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, State Minister for Finance Ahmed Mazin and HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.
The Environment Ministry said that under the agreement, HDC has allocated an area of approximately one hectare for the building of the Waste Transfer Station. The project, estimated to cost USD 13 million, will see the construction of the station within one and a half years.
The exact location of the allocated land plot has not been announced as of yet.
At present, waste management in Hulhumale' is conducted at a WAMCO site located adjacent on the north side to the STO Hotel.
The Environment Ministry said that this station falls under the Greater Male' Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project.
This is a project being run by the government of Maldives since 2018 with assistance from Asian Development Bank, JFPRR and TASF.
Under this project, Waste Transfer Stations will be set up in Male' and ViliMale' as well. The Male' Waste Transfer Station has already reached completion last year and is currently in use. This station is managed by WAMCO.
Under this waste management project, the practice of burning waste in Thilafushi has been brought to an end. Now, with the use of modern machinery, waste is sustainably disposed of. This project will see waste management programs set up in many other islands as well.
