Maldivian Twitter community, in viral fashion, came together to organize the #TwitSaafu cleanup in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' for Friday, June 14.
The citizen-led cleanup gained traction overnight via a single tweet, prompting the organizers to schedule the cleanup.
The cleanup will take place from BBQ area till the tourist beach, encompassing the eastern coast of the island. The event will commence at 1400 hrs and conclude at 1800 hrs.
Additionally, the event will feature live music performances from various renowned musicians.
"I was expecting to get at least 10-15 people to clean up the beach", said organizer Siyana Mohamed Solih (Naa), noting that the event was initially thought out as a small scale activity as an example for her 4-year old daughter who wanted to collect the "grubbish" littered throughout her resident island.
Later blowing up on social media, the event garnered support and collaboration from anonymous donors, state-owned Hulhumale' Development Corporation (HDC) and various private companies such as Veligaa Hardware, Parley and Pizza Buona.
Local NGO Save The Beach, coastal cleanup initiative 'Project Damage Control' and 'American Center Male' will provide assistance for the event.
Moreover, the organizing team revealed that discussions are underway with potential contributors and highlighted positive responses from the corporate sphere.
In order to assist coordination with a growing number of interested individuals, the organizers established a telegram group. Over 600 people have joined the group since.
The organizers are expecting a turnout of approximately 200 participants
