President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 200 housing units will be constructed on the island of Ihavandhoo in Haa Alif atoll.

Visiting Ihavandhoo during his official visit to the atoll, the President told residents that he will fulfil his pledge during his presidential campaign visit to resolve the housing issues faced by residents of Ihavandhoo.

He said that although it had been previously announced that 100 housing units will be built on the island, a decision has now been made to increase the number to 200.

He highlighted that housing in Ihavandhoo is key in the plans for development in the northern atolls.

Ministry of Finance and Planning made an announcement yesterday seeking contractors to build 12,000 housing units across the atolls. Referring to this, the President said that this year's budget has an allocation of MVR 1.5 billion for housing projects alone.

"Never in the history of Maldives has there been such a large amount allocated for housing in the budget. Housing in Male' is not included [in the 12,000 housing units]. Those are separate projects which we will announce separately," he told residents.

The government has previously announced that work will be commenced this year to build a total of 27,000 housing units, which includes 15,000 in the Male' area and 12,000 across the atolls.
