Maldives Meteorological Service (Met) has said today that weather will worsen again for a large part of the Maldives starting tomorrow.

MET said that a depression has formed in the Bay of Bengal. They have also predicted that this depression will move westward and its effects will be felt across Maldives starting tomorrow.

MET stated that this rainy weather is expected to last for six days, with some islands experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Due to this depression, winds will generally intensify and seas will also become rough. MET also predicts that some islands in the northern and central Maldives will be affected by sea swells.

Since the beginning of this year, various regions of the Maldives have suffered significant damage from heavy rains. For instance, on January 3, rain in the Male' area caused flooding on almost all roads, and homes suffered extensive damage.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has stated that the damage from that incident amounts to MVR 2.2 million, making it the most damaging rainfall incident in Male' to date.

Due to that day's heavy rain, temporary shelter had to be provided for 44 people from seven households.

MET has advised the public to be mindful of weather conditions before traveling by sea during this period of adverse weather.
