President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that delays are being faced in publishing the list of flat recipients due to the government's efforts to ensure that fairness in the process is guaranteed.
The President made these remarks in his speech last night at the ceremony held at the Social Centre to mark a year since this administration came to office.
President Muizzu, in his speech, assured that the government would not withdraw flats from those named in a list published in the gazette by the previous administration. However, if the said lists included recipients who had gained flats through submitting false information, then those individuals will be removed from the list, he said.
It was earlier announced that the list of recipients of the 4000 flats in Hulhumale' Phase 2 under the previous administration's 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme would be reviewed and published before the end of October. Since then, the Ministry of Housing, Land and Infrastructure has been working on publishing the list for the past two weeks of November as well.
Yesterday, members of the public gathered at the ministry, demonstrating against the delays in publishing said list.
Last night, the President assured that if legitimate information had been provided, then no flats or land plots would be taken away. He pointed out that it is for this reason that the land plots in Hulhumale' 2 have also been handed over now.
He said that land plots will also be handed over from Hulhumale' Phase 3, GulhiFalhu and GiraavaruFalhu as soon as reclamation is completed.
"The thing with the flat list is, Housing Ministry is spending a lot of time on it. The committees formed for the purpose are also overseeing the efforts. We are doing this to ensure no undue influence from any person or entity is made on this. No one can influence it," he said.
The President said that his wish is for the 4000 flats to be allocated with integrity and fairness, in accordance with the point system and the announced requirements.
"The 4000 flats will be granted to recipients listed in this order. If it is someone who has submitted false documentation or information, then they would always be removed from the list. I have said this before as well," he said.
President Muizzu said that many factors have to be considered in reviewing the flat list. As an example, he said that points had been altered in a manner to ensure flats are given to political members of the previous government's flat committee. He said that details of this would be revealed.
He further said that seniors of the previous administration, and members of powerful families, had also been granted flats. From some applicants, documents besides those submitted via the portal had also been accepted, subsequently awarding them flats. He also alleged that some applicants had been awarded flats through submitting nothing more than copies of their identity cards.
"So what are they talking about now? Marks have been changed from the backend of the portal just to award flats against set policies. Imagine how much concern they will be showing about this now then. This is why there are delays. There will be delays when this is the case, won't there? We will look into all this, and god willing, complete this with absolute fairness," he assured.
