According to the association, its member guesthouses believe that a blanket ban on Israeli passport holders could significantly affect the tourism sector of a small nation like Maldives.
National Hotels and Guesthouses Association has said that it does not support a complete ban on Israeli passport holders entering the Maldives.
Speaking at a meeting of Parliament's Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) to discuss an amendment to the Immigration Act seeking the ban, the association said the measure could harm the guesthouse sector.
According to the association, its member guesthouses believe that a blanket ban on Israeli passport holders could significantly affect the tourism sector of a small nation like Maldives.
The association highlighted that such a "big decision" would likely have adverse effects on Maldives as many international tourist agencies and online platforms have Jewish stakeholders or clients.
The association further noted that Jews living in other countries often hold Israeli passports, and a ban could negatively impact tourism.
The amendment to the Immigration Act was introduced by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem. The 241 Committee is currently reviewing the bill and has decided to consult with political parties, government agencies, and tourism associations on the matter.
The ruling PNC-majority committee indicated that it expects to conclude work on the bill by February next year.
