13 Corrections officers arrested in Maafushi Prison smuggling network

Police said that 18 Correctional officers were involved in the crime, and MVR 73.6 million had been deposited into their accounts during the past year.

The Maldives Correctional Service has arrested 13 officers involved in a network smuggling illegal substances and mobile phones into Maafushi Prison, located on Maafushi island, 30 minutes away from the capital city, Malé.

The officers were arrested during a major police operation that began yesterday.

In a press conference held yesterday, police said that 18 Correctional officers were involved in the crime, and MVR 73.6 million had been deposited into their accounts during the past year.

Police added that 13 officers were arrested during the operation.

Of the 13, nine officers were arrested from Maafushi, two from Kaashidhoo, one from Utheemu, and one from Male'.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef, during the press conference, said that 18 Corrections officers were allegedly involved in the supply of drugs and mobile phones to prisoners in Maafushi prison.

A total of MVR 24 million has been deposited into the account of one officer over several occasions, Shareef said. He also mentioned that a total of MVR 73.6 million has been transferred to the accounts of the 18 employees involved in the case since January of last year.

Shareef said that the accounts belonging to those involved will be traced, and legal action will be taken against them.
