Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu does not exert any undue influence over the judiciary, asserting that the judicial system is running well now.

Of the three Supreme Court judges suspended last week, Judge HusnuSuood handed in his resignation yesterday. In his resignation letter, Suood noted that once the Supreme Court decided that the court has the jurisdiction to hear a case submitted regarding a constitutional amendment on MPs losing parliamentary seats, the parliament, with ruling party supermajority, had passed a bill reducing the number of judges on the Supreme Court bench from seven to five.

Suood described this as an attempt to intimidate Supreme Court judges, and as exerting influence to ensure the outcome of the case comes in the way that the President desires.

In a statement released today, PNC responded to these allegations, stating that Suood's actions yesterday are political, much as his actions were ahead of being sworn in as a Supreme Court judge.

PNC alleges that Suood had sent his resignation letter to the President instead of the JSC in order to raise baseless allegations against the President. They reiterated that the State is acting towards all judges, including Suood, as per the Constitution, laws and regulations.

PNC went on to state that President Muizzu has facilitated the JSC and other independent institutions to work free from influence. They said that actions taken by such institutions are not 'influence on the judiciary', but rather a testament to the fact that the judicial system is working as it should.
