Azima Shakoor has appealed the MVR 1.4 million sentence against her at the High Court.
Azima is the Male' City mayoral candidate of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition.
The sentence was passed against her in absentia in response to a case submitted at the Civil Court by the Islamic Bank citing failure of loan repayment. However, Azima claims that the sentence was issued while she is currently in deliberations with the bank seeking loan restructuring.
The appeal was submitted at High Court on last Tuesday. The High Court has not yet decided on acceptance of the case.
Although some local media reported that there are additional cases against Azima ongoing at the Civil Court, the court has rejected those claims. Azima has submitted the matter to relevant institutions.
