Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has stated that the only mayoral candidate who can implement the government's pledges to the people of Male', as well as provide a service akin to that given by former mayor President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, is the ruling coalition's candidate Azima Shakoor.
Azima Shakoor is running for the mayoral seat on the ticket of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC).
Speaking at a campaign rally on Tuesday night, VP Latheef stated that in addition to the post of mayor, the majority of the entire Male' should be won by PPM/PNC.
"PPM/PNC must have a super majority in the city council. What I mean is, we need this so that the Male City Council can coordinate with the government to implement actions," he said.
He noted that during his tenure as mayor, President Dr Muizzu was able to work together with members of other parties due to his wisdom and experience.
He said that as a result, it must be accepted that some of the candidates currently running for the mayoral position also share the visions of the former mayor, and must work to implement them. However, as President Muizzu has backed Azima as the preferred candidate, the necessary development can be brought to the people only through electing her to the post.
He highlighted that this election poses an opportunity to change past experiences of discord rising between the government and the city council.
