A biography book on the life of one of Maldives' most successful businessmen and the Speaker of the Parliamentary session which formulated the current constitution of the country, Qasim Ibrahim, will be released on the 10th of this month.
The book is written by experienced journalist and author Mohamed Jameel, marking his third book. His other two books are 'Orchid' on the coup d'état of Maldives' first President Mohamed Amin Didi and 'Insaafu', a biography on former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed.
A hardcover edition of Qasim's biography, an audio book and a special website will be launched at the book launching ceremony to be held at Villa College on Monday night.
An exhibition of photographs from various periods of Qasim's life will also be opened that night. The exhibition will be open to the public from 9:00 am to 10:30 pm on Tuesday. Visitors of the exhibition will be given a free copy of the book, the organisers said.
The book, which is more than seven hundred pages long, highlights all the main issues that Qasim faced in his personal, business and political life. Colour photos of Gasim, which have not been seen publicly, are also included.
“His successes and failures, charitable services, business, social role, family life and the major political changes he had to go through are covered in great detail (in this book) without any evasion,” Qasim’s Villa Foundation said in a press release.
In Maldives, Qasim is deemed as a businessman who has made revolutionary and innovative changes in many industries of the country, especially tourism.
He is also a philanthropist, having provided many medical and educational opportunities to the public. Qasim's Villa College is also one of the best educational institutions in the country.
Some also consider Qasim as a key player in bringing political reform movements to Maldives. He participated in the famous August 12 and 13, 2004 rallies that caused the biggest shock to Maldives political scene, after which he was arrested and imprisoned.
He was also one of the first to sign up for the formation of one of Maldives' largest political parties, MDP. Qasim later played an active role in opposition DRP, and went on to form his own party named Jumhooree Party, which he leads to this day.
Qasim is also one of the most senior members of the Parliament, and played an important role in the passage of the current Constitution as the Speaker of the Parliament at the time as well
Qasim served as the Finance Minister, MMA's Governor and Home Minister during President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom's administration. He has also contested in the 2008, 2013 and 2023 presidential elections.
