Maldives has signed an agreement with Australia, seeking technical assistance for the formulation of its 20 year National Development Master Plan.

At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development yesterday, a Letter of Exchange was signed between the two governments. Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed signed on behalf of the Maldives, while Australia's High Commissioner to the Maldives, David Jessup signed on behalf of the Australian government.

The Australian government will provide AUD 900,000 (approximately MVR 9.4 million) in aid under the UNDP Integrated Governance Project to support the Maldives in drafting the master plan, according to the ministry.

Maldives cabinet had decided last month to begin the drafting process for the 20 year National Development Master Plan.

Speaking about the decision, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the plan will be implemented within the next year with broad public participation, including input from political parties, associations, stakeholders, and experts.

"The Master Plan will be supported by dedicated legislation," President Muizzu said, emphasizing that the vision for the Maldives' future must be shaped by the will of the people.

President Muizzu said that discussions would take place across all islands to ensure the plan reflects the needs of all citizens.
