It has come to light that MVR 13 million was paid as compensation and pension money to eight employees in return for the treatment meted out to employees of the Aviation Security Command during the previous administration.
According to the Aviation Security Command 2021 audit report publicized by the Auditor General’s Office, compensation had to be paid to the eight employees as they were dismissed from their positions outside of the regulations. The employees were sacked by the Aviation Security Command following an intelligence report alleging that they were neglecting their job duties.
However, the employees were sacked without fulfilling the requirements required under the Civil Servants Rules, the audit report said.
The Auditor General's Office said, the High Court had in 2018 ordered eight employees to be paid MVR 1.2 million, as compensation for six months and 24 days. The money was paid by the office to the employees that year.
In 2020, the Supreme Court reviewed the verdict. Since the dismissal procedure was not fulfilled when letting these employees go, the employees were paid MVR 11.3 million as pension from May 2015 to November 2015, in addition to compensation from May/November of 2015 to November 2020.
According to the Auditor General's Office, this was a serious problem as there is no fixed amount of compensation for employees in the circumstances arising out of employment contracts.
The AGO additionally stated action should be taken against those who lay off employees without following procedure.
