For the first time in recent history, a Vice President of the Maldives has visited Iran today.

According to the President's Office, the Vice President of Maldives Hussein Mohamed Latheef arrived in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Vice President was received at Iran's airport by Aladdin Boroujerdi, Vice President of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran.

Vice President Hussein Mohamed Latheef is scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony in the Parliament tomorrow as a special representative of President Mohamed Muizzu.

On May 17, 2016, the Maldives severed diplomatic ties with Iran, which was marked by the absence of the head of the country at the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new president.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated at the time that ties established on June 2, 1975, had been severed because Iran was obstructing peace and stability in the Arab Gulf region.

However, after a gap of seven years, the Maldives and Iran re-established diplomatic relations on March 10, 2023.
