The government has spent more than MVR 80 million on cars for senior state officials over the past 13 years, the Ministry of Finance said today.

"G" board cars of the state are provided to ministers, Supreme Court judges, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, heads of independent bodies, and other ministerial-level posts. The heads of the three branches of government (Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary) are given a car with the state emblem.

In response to questions sent by Mihaaru News under the Right to Information Act, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday that 62 cars have been imported for state and government officials since 2011, with a total expenditure of MVR 87.4 million.

Of these, 10 cars were imported from Japan this year alone, costing MVR 12 million. The Ministry stated that from 2018 to 2023, 25 cars were imported, with an expenditure of MVR 35.5 million.

The cars are typically used for 5-15 years, after which they are handed over for use by other government agencies.

Sirius Enterprises was first awarded the contract to import cars for state purposes. In 2016 and 2017, Cykbiz Investment was awarded the contract, and since 2019, the State Trading Organization (STO) has handled the imports.
