Life sentence for man caught in possession of drugs in prison

Criminal Court has issued a life sentence in prison for a man caught in possession of drugs while already serving a sentence in Maafushi Prison.

In 2016, while he was serving a sentence at Maafushi Jail, he was caught hiding drugs in the boxers he was wearing. In this operation, Maldives Correctional Service seized over 30 grams of diamorphine.

In the verdict issued by the Criminal Court on Thursday, they said that although he had denied the charges, as the drugs were found inside the boxers he were wearing, it is proven that it was found in his possession under the rules of 'hiyazat'. It further said that as he did not deny drugs were found there, it is proven that he was aware that it was drugs found at the time.

The Criminal Court sentenced him to life in prison, and levied a fine of MVR 100,000 against him, which has to paid to the State within one month.
