The Registrar of High Court has decided to reject the case lodged by Mid Hithadhoo Constituency parliamentarian, Ahmed Rasheed requesting a second chance to contend in the upcoming parliamentary election.

Registrar of High Court, Mariyam Hurusheedha stated that this decision was due to her belief that the court does not possess the capacity to hear the case. The decree elaborated that this was because cases linked to the decisions of the Elections Commission (EC) on the submission of request for election candidacy are required to be taken to Supreme Court.

Owner of all Checkmark stores, Rasheed, who had submitted his name to contend for the Mid Hithadhoo Constituency under the ticket of The Democrats had withdrawn his candidacy earlier. This was allegedly due to the elections falling within the month of Ramadan, as reported by Mihaaru News.

With the rescheduling of the parliamentary elections for post Ramadan, Rasheed had lodged a case to the Elections Commission to approve his form however, the Commission had decided against it.

While the election was delayed, the Commission had not offered another window to apply for the election candidacy.

The parliamentary election was initially slated for the 17 of this month, however, the parliament had amended the law to disallow hosting of elections during the month of Ramadan.

The Commission had announced the postponement of the elections to the 21st of April in conformity of the new amendment.
