MP for Central Hithadhoo constituency Ahmed Rasheed (also known as Checkmark Rasheed, in reference to his personal business) has lodged a case at the High Court appealing to be granted the opportunity to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Earlier, Rasheed had withdrawn his candidacy after having applied through The Democrats. It has been reported that his reason for withdrawing his name at the time was that the elections were then scheduled to be held within the month of Ramadan.

However, upon the announcement that the elections had been officially postponed to April 21, Rasheed approached the Elections Commission and requested them to accept his candidacy form. However, reports say the commission rejected the form.

Although the polling day has been postponed, the Elections Commission did not extend the window for applications of candidates.

Last Thursday, Rasheed submitted an election related complaint against the Elections Commission's decision at the High Court. The court has so far not decided whether it will be accepting the case.

The parliamentary elections were initially scheduled to be held on March 17. However, after the President ratified the bill passed twice by Parliament with amendments to the General Elections Act, holding the election during Ramadan became against the law.

Hence, the Elections Commission rescheduled the elections to the first available date after Ramadan, falling on Sunday, April 21.
