Regional Airports Company Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen has stated that all work on Meemu atoll Muli Airport has now been completed, with the target being to begin operations on the first of March next year.
The previous administration had contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop the airport. MTCC was contracted to complete the development within a year for MVR 212 million. The work, however, took longer than planned due to budget constraints.
Mubeen said that all construction work at the airport has now been completed. Currently, finishing work is being done on the terminal and the air traffic control tower, he said, adding that this too is nearing completion now.
He said that an order has now been placed to procure the fire truck necessary for the airport. Once this is received, test flights can be scheduled for March 1, thus commencing operations.
The government has recently placed the Muli Airport under the Regional Airports Company.
