President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that the Maldives requires global partnership to further expand and strengthen the country's cybersecurity infrastructure.

Speaking as Co-Chair at the UN Summit of the Future's "Interactive Dialogue 3: Towards a Common Digital Future", President Muizzu said artificial intelligence has advanced at a pace that even experts struggle to keep up with.

However, he added that the pressing reality is that over a third of the global population does not have access to the internet, particularly in developing countries.

"This digital divide is not only about access to internet. It is a profound barrier to development, opportunity, and justice," he said.

To bridge the digital divide and achieve the objectives of the Global Digital Compact, President Muizzu offered three suggestions;

President Muizzu highlighted the importance of investing in digital skills and encouraging youth participation in the digital economy, with a commitment to developing local expertise in the field.

He emphasized the importance of building a robust digital infrastructure to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. President Muizzu highlighted that digital transformation is crucial for advancing sustainable development goals and improving various sectors in the Maldives.

President Muizzu also stressed on the importance of protecting consumer rights in the digital space, noting the real challenges of unauthorized access, account hijacking, and data privacy.

While the Maldives has established the National Cybersecurity Agency to address these concerns, President Muizzu highlighted the need for resources to maintain a resilient cybersecurity infrastructure.

“Ambitious actions in this area demand international cooperation, investment, and genuine partnerships,” he said.
