A private company, Relax Ferry Service, has claimed ownership of MVR 1.4 million discovered by police at the residence of former Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.
The money, found in a bag during an investigation into alleged fraud linked to the Binveriyaa housing scheme, was said by the company to be payment for building a vessel. Relax Ferry Service, which operates speedboats in the Male' area, revealed in a Facebook post that the funds were handed to Fazul's company late last month following consultations and a deal signed in 2022.
Details of the charges being investigated in connection with Fazul and the recovered funds remain unclear. Police have yet to commented on the matter.
Police had earlier said they had searched Fazul's house and seized some items for investigation. This included some electronic equipment, police said.
Police had previously stated that electronic devices and other items were seized during the search. Investigations by the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are looking into corruption allegations, including the misallocation of Vinares flats and fraudulent practices in the allocation of flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme.
Among them, Fazul has been accused of using his position to allocate land to ineligible individuals, including his brother, MWSC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed who was not eligible for land plots.
Fazul resigned from his position on December 21, citing the need to allow investigations to proceed unhindered. His passport has since been confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.
