Shamaan’s wife’s phone seized, two banned from travel

Shamaan was arrested on Friday night under a court order for allegedly accepting bribes from an expatriate who was detained by immigration in exchange for his release.

Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed's wife's phone and passports of two others have been seized.

Shamaan was arrested on Friday night under a court order for allegedly accepting bribes from an expatriate who was detained by immigration in exchange for his release.

A police spokesperson said the phone of a member of Shamaan's family had been seized under a court order and two others had been banned from travel under a court order.

Miharu News reported that the family member of Shamaan whose phone was seized in connection with the case is his wife Hidfa Faiz.

Criminal Court extended Shamaan's remand for 15 days. The remand of the three immigration employees accused in the case was also extended yesterday.

Police previously stated that after releasing the expatriate, immigration officers took MVR 530,000 taken in exchange of his release to the building where Shamaan resides.

Bribery accusations were raised against Shamaan after police investigation received information that immigration officials abused their positions to search an expatriate accommodation, taking the expats into detention and seizing the cash found on them.

Police said that this operation was conducted by staff of sections other than the Task Force and Risk Management sections which hold the responsibility of finding and detaining expatriates living and working illegally in the country. Police said that the staff involved had abused their positions in carrying out this operation.
