The Parliament's Judiciary Committee on Monday approved the dismissal of Ahmed Shukoor, the Chief Magistrate of Gaafu Alif Atoll's Maamendhoo judicial constituency.
Shukoor was suspended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Sunday, for a period of 60 days over allegations of corruption and gross misconduct.
During the meeting held to discuss the magistrate's suspension, the committee decided that JSC's suspension was valid and moved to forward the issue to the parliament floor.
JSC is currently investigating claims that Shukoor met with the attorney of an individual with close ties to Shukoor prior to their remand hearing, as well as publicly endorsing a presidential candidate during the previous elections.
According to the Constitution, judges can only be removed by a two-third majority vote of all the members present in a parliament session, based on a submission by JSC, which is tasked with the responsibility of investigating and taking measures against problematic judges.
