President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to embrace Islamic principles and respect Maldivian values, emphasising that doing so would bring both spiritual fulfilment and prosperity.
He made the remarks during his special address on National Identity Revival Day.

He affirmed his commitment to preserving the nation's identity, guided by the teachings of Islam and the Holy Quran, to ward off harmful influences while fostering positive values in society.
Stating that a nation’s cultural framework is shaped by its worldview, President Muizzu explained that the culture and customs of the Maldives are rooted in the moral teachings of Islam.
He stressed that embracing and upholding Islam has been the defining characteristic of Maldivian national identity.
Noting the significance of National Identity Revival Day falling during Ramadan this year, President Muizzu underscored the role of Islam in shaping the nation. He credited Islam with upholding human dignity, discouraging wrongdoing, fostering respect for leadership, contributing to religious infrastructure, and promoting values such as honesty and regular prayer.
Drawing on accounts from foreign travellers, the President cited their descriptions of Maldivian brotherhood, highlighting the compassion, empathy, and peace that they observed among the people. He also referenced historical moments when the nation united to repel foreign invaders, driven by their unwavering faith in defending Islam.
President Muizzu described the nation’s identity as being deeply rooted in the collective conscience of Maldivians over millennia. He noted that this identity has evolved through shared experiences, cultures, population growth, and beliefs, which have ensured the continuity of the nation’s existence.
The President concluded his address by urging a collective commitment to uphold the principles of Islam and Maldivian values, wishing that the Maldives continues to be a prosperous nation, enriched with both spiritual and emotional well-being.
