Minister of Finance Moosa Zameer has assured that even if the medical welfare scheme of Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is replaced by private insurance, they will not need to pay for services at their own expense.

The detailed budget report for 2025 states that a private insurance package will be arranged for families of Police and MNDF officers in a bid to control spending from the State. It added that once private insurance coverage is exhausted, the officers will receive coverage through Aasandha.

In the Budget Review Committee meeting in parliament yesterday, Zameer said that changes are proposed to Police and MNDF Medical Welfare Scheme to assign a private insurance company to manage it, and streamline the service.

He asserted that no inconvenience will be caused to Police or MNDF officers through this change.

The changes were proposed due to significantly high expenses through the existing scheme.

The audit report also shows that spending on MNDF and Police medical welfare scheme was 35 percent over the determined budget last year. The audit office said that the budget included an allocation of MVR 179 million for additional insurance, but the actual figures reached MVR 241 million by year end.

newIn 2019, MVR 148 million was spent on coverage for MNDF and Police officers, and their families. Within the past five years, spending on this scheme has increased by approximately 40 percent.
