A Chinese company has been awarded the contract to develop 1,000 flats in Baa atoll Eydhafushi.

The project will include 12 15-storey towers with three-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

The contract was awarded to China's Sinohydro Company at a ceremony held at the President's Office.

Speaking after signing the agreement, Minister of Construction Dr Abdulla Muththalib said the main reason for constructing 12 15-storey towers in Eydhafushi is that the island is being developed as an urban center, and vertical development is important to make the best use of the land.

Details of flats to be built in Eydhafushi:

- 336 three-bedroom flats

- 672 two-bedroom flats

Muththalib said that Eydhafushi is a central hub for bringing together population and development in Baa atoll.

The minister also said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has promised to provide housing to those working in the tourism sector, as there are many resorts located around the island.

He highlighted that Eydhafushi is an ideal location for the housing project due to its well established institutions of higher education, adequate health services, and easy accessibility by sea and air.

"Education, health, and transportation services in Eydhafushi are well-developed, making it a good location to launch the government’s housing project," he said.

Minister Muththalib expressed hope to secure financing for the project next year and assured that residents would be able to move into the flats before the end of this term.
