The Civil Court has ruled that the case to recover money owed to the state by the dissolved DRP (Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party) cannot proceed since there is no one to take responsibility for the party's debt.

Although the Civil Court ruled in 2018 that the DRP had to pay MVR 83,000 within one month as rent for Dharubaaruge, DRP did not comply with this ruling. As a result, the court decided to proceed with enforcing the judgment.

While the case was ongoing, DRP was dissolved in 2023. The state requested the court to determine who should be responsible for the debt. However, the Civil Court indicated that identifying who should be responsible for the debt falls outside the scope of an enforcement proceeding.

Therefore, the Civil Court ruled yesterday that the enforcement case cannot proceed until a party responsible for DRP's confirmed debt is determined.

As part of enforcing the judgment, former DRP president Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) was summoned to court, and MVR 5,000 was deposited from his account. However, it was later determined that there was no basis to do this without his consent, and the court returned the money to Nasheed.

A case related to DRP's debt is currently before the Supreme Court. This case involves MTCC's request to the High Court to hold former DRP president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom responsible for over a million rufiyaa owed by the party to MTCC. Maumoon has appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking a ruling that he cannot be held responsible in this way.
