Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has also stated that he, too, will forego 50 percent of his salary.

In a post on social media X last night, Abdul Raheem said that he had made this decision in support of the President's decision to reduce 10 percent of salary of all political appointees as a means of reducing State expenditure.

The current salary of the Parliament Speaker is MVR 73,125. With this decision, he will now be receiving a monthly salary of MVR 36,562.5.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also announced that he will be taking 50 percent of pay.

The President has proposed yesterday to cut salaries of State officials, parliament members, judges, company management and political appointees by 10 percent for a period of two years.

The President said that this measure will be taken when submitting the budget proposal for next year to the parliament, under the government's current fiscal reform agenda.

The president, however, said that those who earn below MVR 12,000 will be exempt from this reduction.

The government has decided to take many austerity measures with the country's economy being in a dire condition.

Under these, the President also announced last week that 228 political appointees will be dismissed. He said that this alone would save MVR 5.7 million for the State.
