All students from the first batch of Maldives National University (MNU)'s School of Medicine have passed with flying colours, the university has announced.

The program, which commenced in September 2018 in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), had 22 students in its first batch. The students took their final exams last Tuesday and learned on Thursday that all of them had passed. They will be graduating in October.

The theory component of the programme was taught by both local and foreign doctors while the clinical practice component was shared between Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and ADK Hospital.

The second batch of med students from MNU's School of Medicine will sit their final exams this October.

Dean of the MNU School of Medicine, Dr Sheeza Ali, stated last night that they faced numerous challenges, considering this is the first MBBS programme in the country. However, seeing all students pass with good results brings great pleasure and pride.

Dr Sheeza also detailed that although the program was physically held in the Maldives, all aspects were directly overseen by UKM. This included providing all the materials required for the exams.

Dr Sheeza also highlighted that UKM regularly audited the program at MNU twice a year to ensure quality.

The course fee of the MNU MBBS programme is MVR 10,000 per month which is roughly USD 650. However, local students are able to study the programme entirely for free under the Maldivian government's first degree initiative.

Currently there are 220 MBBS students studying at MNU.
