The contracts of 18 companies that failed to initiate education-related projects have been canceled and handed over to other companies, Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu said.

Speaking on PSM last night discussing preparations for the new academic year, Minister Shafeeu said that several projects had been delayed due to the nonpayment of MVR 280 million for various education initiatives when the government took office.

However, he noted that much of the backlog was cleared last year.

The Minister said that while the government had settled the outstanding payments and set specific start dates for the projects, many were still not initiated. As a result, the contracts for the 18 companies were terminated and reassigned to other firms.

“Eighteen companies that failed to start their projects despite multiple deadlines will have their contracts canceled and the work reassigned,” he said.

Additionally, the Minister revealed that 20 companies which have not met performance standards will be identified this week, with their agreements also set for termination.

“We have identified 20 projects that are not progressing as expected, and we hope to reassign them to new companies tomorrow,” he stated.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had previously mentioned that agreements made during the previous administration which had failed to be implemented in islands would be canceled. He said that the projects were hindered by the lack of proper budgeting and the inconsistent awarding of contracts to small and medium-sized companies.
