A resolution submitted by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) calling for the expedited passage of a bill to ban Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives has been rejected by Parliament.
Following a debate on the resolution submitted by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), 63 members voted against it, 15 voted in favor, and one member abstained.
Following which, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that the resolution was not passed.
MP Ibrahim's resolution condemned violence against Palestinians but argued that no concrete actions had been taken over the past year to implement the government's stance.
The call to ban Israeli passports in the Maldives was first proposed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem who submitted an amendment to the Immigration Act, which prompted a cabinet decision supporting the ban.
However, MP Ibrahim's resolution noted that the bill has been stalled in the Parliament's 241 Committee for the last four months, despite the ruling party's majority in the parliament expediting other matters by holding extraordinary sittings.
“I submitted this resolution to urge the government to expedite the debating on the proposed bill to amend the Immigration Act,” the resolution said.
