Supreme Court Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir has requested that her Judicial Service Commission (JSC) hearings be opened to the public.

Her lawyer, Ibrahim Shameel, speaking to Mihaaru News said that they have formally asked the JSC to allow public access to the proceedings. He said that JSC's decision will be shared once finalized.

Judge Azmiralda is scheduled to appear before JSC tomorrow regarding allegations that she attempted to influence Criminal Court judges to release her husband, Dr Ismail Latheef, from custody.

A second case against her involves claims that she was present when former Supreme Court Judge Husnu Su'ood allegedly used demeaning language toward High Court Assistant Registrar Hussain Mohamed Haneef.

Both Justice Azmiralda and Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir are accused in these cases, with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also investigating the alleged judicial influence.

Her lawyer has denied the accusations, stating in a letter to the JSC that no judge was contacted or influenced.

The suspensions of Judges Husnu Su’ood, Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Dr Azmiralda Zahir occurred just 15 minutes before the Supreme Court was set to hear a petition challenging a constitutional amendment that mandates MPs lose their seats if they defect or are expelled from their party.

The suspensions also coincide with the parliament passing an amendment to the Judicature Act, which reduces the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five. Several legal experts have expressed concerns that this amendment is unconstitutional. The amendment is yet to be ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
